My Mission:
To save lives and STOP 5000 Annual Boat Accidents
with 500 Dead and 3000 Injuries

Boat Accident Prevention Handbook
The shocking number of deaths and injuries from pleasure boating in the USA alone, as well as worldwide, must be reduced!
However, it takes time, money, and well-planned efforts for responsible captains and boat owners to minimize the risks of serious boating accidents to an acceptable level. It is possible to spend countless hours and vast amounts of money to improve a boat’s safety, but both time and money are limited for most captains and boat owners.
To enjoy boating and sailing without excessive risks and without spending too much time or money, Captain Oscar offers you short and precise action plans to prevent the worst possible accidents that cause deaths and injuries, such as collisions, fires, sinking, drowning, and shipwrecking. You can always do more, but by completing these actions, you will achieve a very good level of safety for yourself and those on board.
This advice may seem theoretical, explaining how and why these tragic accidents happen, and providing lists of what to do, what to learn, and how to best choose your captain, train, and brief your crew.
You will also find the official safety checklist of the US Coast Guard. After all that, for boaters and sailors who do not have much experience, Captain Oscar adds some stories of his most interesting and exciting boating and sailing experiences, such as: how he overcame his worst storm in the infamous and treacherous North Sea, the story of his first Atlantic crossing, the funny tale of the ballerina with the flexible rig, and how to sail in a storm with a defective rudder.

Boat 1
Klepper Aerius 2
KLEPPER AERIUS 2 was a very remarkable one, and I believe you may be surprised to hear that a German medical doctor, Dr. Lindemann, who wanted to prove the strength of meditation, had successfully and safely crossed the Atlantic alone in one of these and used his self-developed meditation method.
As a student for my MBA in Munich, Germany, I spent a summer season as a sailing instructor in a sailing school on the Italian Island of Elba in the Mediterranean, and got my first sailing certifications.
That kayak was good for a few trips on the River Rhine near my hometown of Cologne in Germany, but soon after, I had grown to be 6 4” and became too tall to sit comfortably in it. Well, after a few adventurous weekend trips with my sister on the small German river Lahn and my friend Karlheinz on the big German Rhine river, I sold it for a good price and became more interested in land vehicles like mopeds and small motorcycles for a few years until I could have my first car.
Years later, when I had met Karin, she was first my girlfriend, then fiancée, and then wife and mother of my daughter Tanja. For the 25 years Karin and I lived in Hamburg, we both liked the idea of owning a small but habitable sailboat and bought a 6.50 m or 22ft fiberglass sailboat that was big enough to accommodate both of us and soon our baby daughter, Tanja.
Boat 2
Wanderer IV
We had a few very nice trips with it in Northern Germany, sailed to the Netherlands, and had fun sailing in the North Sea and around the Dutch islands.
A few years later, after our adventurous time working as delivery skipper and crew on a fishing vessel from Germany to the UK, we endured my all-time worst storm in the North Sea and luckily barely got safely through it.
Later 1986 when we wanted to leave the cool and rainy climate of Germany and move permanently to the French southern coast, we bought our first big boat Lady Sunshine No 1, and used her as a temporary home living on her in a marina for the time while we were trying to find and buy the right house in the South of France.
